What Is Animate?

Animate is an interdenominational, intergenerational workshop in worship, theology, and the arts for high school students and their mentors. You can attend as an individual, with a friend, or with a team from your congregation or school. At Animate, students will hone leadership skills, adults will sharpen their mentoring tools, and everybody will work together to practice and reflect on the intersection between worship, theology, and the arts.

Browse this page for more information about Animate 2015: June 29-July 3 on the Samford University campus.  Online Registration for 2015 is  closed.  Email anima@samford.edu if you would like to attend.  Or, mark your calendars for next year’s Animate: June 27-July 1, 2016.

IT’S ALL GOOD

“We are God’s accomplishment, created in Christ Jesus to do good things. God planned for these good things to be the way that we live our lives.”
— Ephesians 2:10 [CEB]

WHO CAN ATTEND?

Register as an individual. This is open to any student who has completed 8th grade through 12th grade and is interested in exploring vocation in a worship and/or arts related field.
Register as a team. Because you’ll get the most out of Animate if you attend with a team of students and adults from your church or school, we strongly encourage teams of students and adult mentors from churches and schools interested in deepening the connections between worship, arts, and justice in their local context. (Local church and school policies  govern the ratio of students to adults as well as gender and age.)

WHAT WILL WE DO?

Worship.  You’ll experience a wide range of worship styles and practices each morning and evening, all led by Samford students and local ministers.
Learn.  We’ll think together about worship, theology, and the arts.  Then, you’ll gain practical skills in worship leadership through workshops that use anima’s innovative teaching methods.
Lead.  The whole week culminates in Thursday afternoon’s Festival of Worship.  You’ll plan and lead a 15-minute worship service with your small group, and you’ll worship with your friends who have done the same.
‐ Engage.  Each evening will feature arts-based events: a theatre production on Tuesday, a visit to the Birmingham Museum of Art on Wednesday, and a concert by John Mark McMillan on Thursday.
‐ Reflect.  You’ll be placed in small groups throughout the week to reflect on your experiences and learn spiritual practices (high school students will be placed in groups led by Samford students; adults will be in a large group led by the Director of anima).
